Most sharks in the open ocean never stop moving, which makes them notoriously hard to photograph well — by the time you've composed a shot, the animal is gone. Whitetip reef sharks break that rule, and once you know why, you can use it.

Why whitetips are easy to shoot: they're not swimming

Whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus) are largely nocturnal, doing most of their hunting and traveling after dark. During the day, they rest — motionless, often for hours — in caves, under coral ledges, or simply on open sand, sometimes sharing the same spot with other whitetips.1 They can do this because, unlike most requiem sharks that must keep swimming to force water over their gills, whitetips can actively pump water across their gills while lying still.1 Practically, that means the shark you find at 9am is very likely to still be in roughly the same spot, not moving, when you come back to it — which turns a notoriously fast-moving subject into one of the more predictable ones in the ocean.

Whitetips are also site-faithful: individuals tend to adopt a specific patch of reef as a long-term home range rather than roaming widely, so the same ledge or sand channel on a dive site will often produce a shark on repeat visits.2 They stay under 1.8 metres (6 feet) long and feed mainly on reef fish, octopus and crustaceans at night, using narrow, agile bodies to work into crevices too tight for larger sharks.12

None of that means they're indifferent to divers. The IUCN lists the whitetip reef shark as Vulnerable, and Oceana notes that almost two-thirds of coral reef sharks and rays globally are now at some risk of extinction, largely from bycatch and reef habitat degradation.2 The photography implication is straightforward: approach a resting shark slowly and from an angle that doesn't block its way out of the cave or channel it's in. A shark that has to bolt past you to leave has been disturbed, not photographed well.

Sea turtles: patience beats pursuit

Costa Rica is home to five of the world's seven sea turtle species — green, hawksbill, olive ridley, loggerhead and leatherback — which makes it one of the more turtle-diverse countries on Earth to dive or snorkel in.3 On the Pacific coast specifically, olive ridleys are the species most likely to turn up on a dive, with new green turtle nesting activity also being documented along this coastline; hawksbills are seen less often and typically alone rather than in groups.43 Guanacaste's own waters carry extra weight for turtle conservation: the Pacific coast's Ostional and Nancite beaches are two of only a handful of mass-nesting "arribada" sites on the planet for olive ridleys, and the Nicoya Peninsula's beaches are considered globally critical for the eastern Pacific leatherback population.3

Unlike a resting shark, a turtle you meet underwater is usually awake, breathing air periodically at the surface, and actively foraging — so the photography approach is different. NOAA Fisheries' public guidelines for photographing sea turtles recommend keeping a minimum distance of roughly 50 yards where practical and never altering course to close in on one; the same guidance applies more broadly to any marine animal: let it dictate the interaction, don't chase it, and back off if you see stress signals like abrupt direction changes.5 In practice, a turtle that isn't being pursued will often keep feeding or swimming naturally within easy camera range on its own — patience produces both the better photograph and the lower-impact encounter.

Two habits that improve almost every underwater shot

Both animals reward the same underlying skill: buoyancy control. Neutral buoyancy — neither sinking nor rising — is what lets you hold a steady shot without finning into the reef or drifting into your subject's space; using a slight exhale to settle and a slow inhale to rise, rather than your hands, keeps you still enough for sharp images and far enough from the substrate to avoid damaging it.6 And with both whitetips and turtles, watching the animal's behavior for a few seconds before raising the camera — which way is it facing, is it settled or alert — tends to produce a better, more natural photo than shooting on approach.6
